Last weekend, I had the special opportunity to interview Dewayne “Lee” Johnson, the groundskeeper who sued Monsanto for giving him cancer and was awarded $289M from a California jury.
Dewayne Johnson was in town to attend the premiere of the documentary Ground War — a filmmaker’s investigation into the death of his father takes him deep into the world of golf, chemical lobbying, and citizen activism, where he learns that the rampant use of pesticides around the world may be far more damaging than he thought.
Ground War was the feature film during the 37th National Pesticide Forum, a conference which was held on Friday and Saturday in New York City.
As Dewayne Johnson told me, his Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma has taken a real toll, and he has lesions all over his body. Needless to say, it is a travesty that people such as Dewayne Johnson have suffered so greatly at the hands of a chemical that should never have been allowed on the market in the first place.
For this man to travel across the country to be at this event speaks to the incredible individual he is, and Dewayne Johnson is an unquestioned hero to those of us in the organic community.
